Visiting Residents/ Students

Visiting Policy:

Visitors (foreign and domestic) must have either medical student or trainee status.

Visiting Residents

The University of Arizona College of Medicine welcomes current residents from other ACGME or ACGME-i accredited programs to complete an elective rotation within our department by completing the following steps:

  • Complete and submit the Medicine Resident Elective Interest Form to Michele Dalmendray
  • Please note that the department will only accept IN-STATE visiting residents who give 90 days notice, and OUT-OF-STATE residents who give 120 days notice prior to beginning the desired rotation.
  • Once the Interest form is received we will work with the respected division to confirm availability.

Once confirmed, visiting residents will be instructed to complete the GME Visiting Resident Application and submit to our Graduate Medical Education office following the stated requirements.

Visiting Students

From LCME- or COCA-accredited medical schools
It is our policy that visiting students from medical schools accredited only by the LCME or COCA will be allowed to participate in our Year IV electives.

For LCME or COCA students, The University of Arizona College of Medicine uses VSAS, the Visiting Student Application Service, to receive visiting student applications. Applications and any supplemental documentation must be submitted through VSAS. To apply to our school, please complete a VSAS application for your preferred electives and dates.

For more information, visit the VSAS website (link is external) or contact VSAS at (link sends e-mail) or (202) 478-9878.

From international medical schools
The University of Arizona College of Medicine does not allow international students to enroll in our courses. However, if a student is well-known by one of our faculty members and that faculty wishes to directly supervise the student in an education activity here, then the faculty member may apply to the Dean of the College of Medicine for permission to sponsor the student. If an international student does not have such a relationship with one of our faculty members, we will
not consider their request.

Please send an email to (link sends e-mail) indicating the name of your University of Arizona faculty sponsor and department. Upon receipt of this information, we will send an application to the address you provide.

HIPAA for visiting students
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) Privacy Rule establishes the conditions under which protected health information may be used or disclosed by covered entities, and defines the means by which individuals will be informed of uses and disclosures of their medical information (as well as their rights to access information about them).

Visiting students must complete the HIPAA compliance training modules
